Young Galah At Apollo Bay

March 4, 2016 by Jade Craven Leave a Comment

These photos are from my January visit to Apollo Bay. The photos are mediocre – no amount of editing could save them! – but I still thought they were fascinating.

I don’t see juvenile galahs that often. I see connecting strands of saliva from adult to chick even less. I’m very much looking forward to returning later this month 🙂

Beautiful Sunset in Apollo Bay

February 28, 2016 by Jade Craven Leave a Comment

It was our last night in Apollo Bay. Mum and I went out for a walk without my nephew. Sethy is awesome but sometimes you just want to explore things at an adult pace.

We took the route that Sethy and I have taken many times before. Mum really loved it, especially the section of the beach between Barham River mouth and the main habour. Then the sun started to set.

Damn!

I had only bought the telephoto lens with me, as I was trying to reduce the amount I carry. I think it actually worked in my favour and forced me to be more creative.

It’s astonishing how much there is to do and photograph in Apollo Bay, even if you stick to the main areas. I’m interested in any ways I could have made these photos better, especially with editing. Hopefully I can take Glenn here in the future 🙂

Quick Visit To Paradise Picnic Ground

February 26, 2016 by Jade Craven Leave a Comment

We only spent three full days in Apollo Bay on our trip last month, so I didn’t have time to visit as many places as I would have liked. This was fine as this holiday was mostly about relaxing – which meant a lot of swimming in a creek, looking at cormorants and having multiple goes on the dodgem cars. Oh yeah!

On the final day, I got to have a quick trip to the picnic ground. I was very appreciative of this and got to show Sethy more of one of my favourite places. Unfortunately he was a bit hypo, which meant he couldn’t get into the area as much as I would have liked.

It was spitting so I used the normal 18-200 lens to capture these photos. I think I saw an olive whistler but didn’t get a good enough view, which was disappointing. Hope to return with the macro lens at another date.

Dusky Moorhen Chicks Along The Barham River

February 2, 2016 by Jade Craven Leave a Comment

Two weeks ago, I was in Apollo Bay. My nephew and I have this routine for our visits. We walk along the back streets of Apollo Bay and do a loop, walking along the Barham River until we get back to the main area. We usually some interesting birdlife and this day was no exception.

There were two dusky moorhen families along the river near the caravan park. I’ve gotten photos of moorhen chicks in the past, but never as clear as this. I am so in love with these photos. I just wish I could have spent more time photographing them!

Black Faced Cormorants at Apollo Bay

January 27, 2016 by Jade Craven Leave a Comment

This trip was a lot more low key then previous trips. We mostly stayed pretty close to the city. This meant there were lots of opportunities to ‘accidentally’ check out the black faced cormorants that hang out in the harbour.

They are incredibly beautiful. I’m pretty sure one of the birds is a couple of months old. I’d love to photograph chicks and juveniles but don’t think that is feasible any time soon.

I love how distinct the markings are on the adult bird. I’ve seen them since then, in Portland, but Apollo Bay is just far more accessible.
