Fungi Spore Prints: Experiment #3

November 11, 2022 by Jade Craven

I was in town with Glenn. We walked past a grassy field when I saw a lot of mushrooms. I suggested picking them to take home. Glenn pointed out that they’d likely get crushed in the bag. If I really wanted to experiment with mushroom spores, we could get some from the shops.

About a week later, he phoned up. The same mushrooms were growing in his front yard. Would I like them?

The experiment was more hit than miss this time. The mushrooms were on paper for less than 24 hours and weren’t placed in a container. Some of the spores came up clearly whereas others looked like they had melted. I have no idea why this happens. Should I dry the mushrooms beforehand?

I think I’m going to step back from creating spore prints as there are too many unknowns. I’ll still do some prints, but won’t go out of my way to find the fungi/mushrooms.
