Accidental Spore Print SUCCESS!

April 25, 2023 by Jade Craven

Yesterday, I was putting the washing on the clothesline when I noticed a couple of small mushrooms nearby. I hadn’t done a spore print experiment in a while.

This is largely due to the many failures I’ve experienced. It is so demoralizing when I put a lot of effort into finding the fungi only for the spore print to fail.

I found some scratch paper that I’d bought for Glenn and put them on that. Then promptly forgot about them.

I returned after 8 hours and looked at the print. It is probably the best one I’ve ever done. Glenn is in love with it and thinks it looks like a galaxy. He is hoping to do ones of his own.

I see more spore print experiments in our near future.

Fungi Spore Prints: Experiment #4

I was walking from the bus stop to a restaurant in North Geelong. I saw this interesting looking mushroom on the side of the path. It was different to the generic white mushrooms I’d tried creating spore prints from before. I put it in a shopping bag, put it in my bag and went to my siblings dinner.

I put it on black paper as soon as I got home. I didn’t think it would create a decent print considering the underside looked old.

I was right. I was still an interesting learning experiment – and one that didn’t take too long. 🙂

Fungi Spore Prints: Experiment #3

I was in town with Glenn. We walked past a grassy field when I saw a lot of mushrooms. I suggested picking them to take home. Glenn pointed out that they’d likely get crushed in the bag. If I really wanted to experiment with mushroom spores, we could get some from the shops.

About a week later, he phoned up. The same mushrooms were growing in his front yard. Would I like them?

🙂
