Plumage Changes With Little Black Cormorants

December 20, 2015 by Jade Craven Leave a Comment

I was photographing the cormorants recently when I noticed that they looked slightly different. They appeared to have new white ‘eyebrows’ of sorts, and white around ears. I also think I may have seen some white on the wings, but this could just be the photos. I will have to double check next time I see them.

According to Birds In Backyards, this is normal.

In the breeding season, adults have fine white flecks on the head and neck and the green tinge becomes more bronze

I’m pretty stoked at being able to figure this out. I guess that I should look for plumage changes before decided that they won’t be breeding in an area.

I wonder if the other cormorants have any noticeable changes? I love birding.
