Recently Hatched Little Black Cormorant Chicks

February 10, 2016 by Jade Craven Leave a Comment

I’ve been looking for signs of little black cormorant chicks for months now. I did see some just before I went to Apollo Bay, but the view wasn’t the best.

Real estate is tight along this stretch of trees. More then half of the nests have chicks but it is very hard to get decent views of them. This adult was in clear view but I couldn’t see anything on the nest. I noticed it moving around a lot so assumed something was close to hatching.

Then I saw it.

There were very brief moments where I could see a young chicks head from underneath the body. It was a 30 degree day, so the parent was working very hard to keep the youngsters cool. I’m very much looking forward to watching this particular family grow up.
