I’ve never seen seahorses in the wild before. Seth and I have seen some on the marine biology cruise, but I don’t class that as ‘the wild,’
I knew we had populations in Corio Bay, but had never managed to see one. I now know that this is because we were looking in the wrong spots.
Seth and I were flying blind with how we were looking for marine life. We changed tactics, based on advice from the field nats, and started getting different species in our nets.
We found three on the day. I’ve identified them as Shorthead Seahorse or Hippocampus breviceps. They were quite small and it is easy to see how they can get overlooked. I didn’t expect there to be so much variation with colour: I initially thought this was two different species.
All were put back after getting photos.
