Musk Lorikeets in Apollo Bay

January 10, 2023 by Jade Craven

I was at my aunts flat in Apollo Bay. I heard lorikeets flying past and landing on a tree in a nearby street. My ears pricked up. They weren’t rainbow lorikeets!

I’m horrid with bird calls, but we get a lot of rainbow lorikeets in Geelong. I’ve become very familiar with their different calls and the shapes of their bodies when flying. I know when something is different.

I got my camera and rushed to the street. I was right! There were a lot of musk lorikeets in this particular tree – and they were close to eye level.

Two Varients of Botryllus Schlosseri in Apollo Bay Harbour

January 9, 2023 by Jade Craven

It was our second night in Apollo Bay – and our first chance for proper rockpooling. I hadn’t even walked down the steps when Seth shouted “I found that ascidian!”

Let’s just ignore the fact that my 14 year old nephew knows what an ascidian is. He was able to find multiple colonies of both the purple and orange variant of Botryllus Schlosseri. This is impressive since the low tide was around .5m. Normally we don’t find the good stuff unless we get a super low tide.

Mum and I decided to see how far we could walk around the Marengo rockpool area. It felt like a long walk between the sets of steps. It turned out we were just walking a short distance between open areas of sandy beach.

I took a lot of photos to show how the rocky platforms had subtle changes. I’m definitely keen to return with an analogue camera and black and white film.
